ISO Management Standard

ISO 18404:2015 – Quantitative methods in process improvement – Six Sigma – Competencies for key personnel and their organizations in relation to Six Sigma and Lean Implementation, is an international standard defines the competencies for both the organization and individual. This standard is applicable to organization using manufacturing processes as well as service and transaction processes.

The standard was created on an international basis to stamp out bad practices and misuse of the approaches. Six Sigma and Lean are lucrative implementation, training, consultancy and certification markets and interest is growing not declining.

Due to there has been a lot of misuse, with deficient training, out of date syllabi, training by rote, serious over claiming and certification or accreditation by varied, and varying quality, providers – all without a valid international mandate. Therefore, ISO step in to support the international certification market and prevent such misuse. This will provide a proper recognition of the rigour and value of the Six Sigma and Lean approaches.

Part 1 of the standard describes a methodology and best practices for business improvement process known as Six Sigma. This methodology typically comprises of 5 Stages – DMAIC. The standards also clarified the roles of personnel involved in a improvement project team.

Part 2 of the standard describes the tools and techniques to be used in each phase of the DMAIC approach. The tools and techniques described in this part applicable to any sector of activity and any sized business seeking to gain competitive advantages.
